Abstract: According to Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP), matching another person's representational language enhances perceived empathy. To test this hypothesis in a Turkish setting, an interviewer matched the language of 10 of 20 participants (aged 15-40 yrs old). With the other half of the participants, she mismatched. In order to eliminate the effect of visual cues on perceived empathy, a screen was placed between the interviewer and the participant. Perceived empathy was assessed by the Empathic Understanding Subscale of the Barrett-Lennard Relationship Inventory. The participants whose language was matched rated the interviewer as significantly more empathic than the participants who were mismatched. Education was also found to be related to perceived empathy. The relationship between matching and empathy remained significant when education was controlled.
